The above document is helpful in talking with your child about their day at school. It helps eliminate the "How was school today?" "Good." one-word responses.
Here are the must-know details of our classroom:
Class Rules, Routines & Expectations: Our rules are simple: Make Good Choices. We follow the School Motto of: Take care of yourself, Take care of others, and Take care of this place. We practice respect for all in our classroom. We embrace and celebrate our diversity. We will be using a "Star Jar" and sticker chart as a way to earn personal and whole-class rewards, and special days!
Bathroom:
Children are taught to signal to me if they need the bathroom while seated on the carpet. This helps eliminate disrupting instruction to raise hand to ask to go. The signal is to shake their pointer finger back and forth up in the air. I will see their signal and tell them to get up to go. Other than that, while working at the tables or otherwise engaged, they are free to go as needed, get tissues, and or drink water. I am asking the students to sign out when they leave the room for the bathroom.

Assessment designed to individualize learning: Our assessments are conducted as pre-assessments, mid-year assessments, progress monitoring, and post-assessments. This allows us to individualize your child's learning experiences based upon their level of knowledge and understanding. With the information we gather, we then utilize large-group whole class instruction as well as small-group guided instruction. More information regarding assessments can be found on the River Edge Website.

Conference sign-ups to be done on-line: Look in your e-mail for links to sign up for a preferred date and time. Please e-mail me in the event that you are unable to make any of the times, and we will schedule an alternate date and time.
Conferences are held twice during the year. There are two days, one with night conference time slots. The school has two shortened days to allow for conferences. You will receive a notice to sign up for a time.
Report Cards: Report cards are given three times a year. You will receive access through the Genesis Portal to your child's report card before Fall and Spring conferences, and then a final report card on the last day of school. ESL and W.I.N. report cards are included with the classroom report card.
Grading/Conferences: Our Report cards are Standards-Based and use the following grading:
1- Needs Support
2- Approaching Grade Level Benchmarks
3- At Grade Level
4- Exceeds Grade Level Expectations
Please note that the expectations for each standard increase as the year goes on. Your child might be at a 3 or even a 4 during one marking period, then move down to a 2 or 3. This does not always mean they are losing academic mastery, but may mean that the expectations have now caught up to their ability levels.
Homework: Homework is given 4 nights a week regularly during the year. Please read to and with your child for 20 minutes. Please have your child complete their homework to the best of their ability. You can go over the directions and explain it, but please let them do it themselves. Get them into the habit of writing their name and class number at the top neatly, and completing both sides of the paper. They should bring the homework back to school the following day, unless otherwise noted. Please note: I will not be grading homework, but I do check and note if it is being done or not. If you have any questions about the assignment, you can: use the answer sheet provided in the Parent Newsletter at the beginning of each unit, you can message me on Dojo, or you can look on the Everyday Math website linked in my website.
Snack: Snack is a 10 minute eating break in the morning or afternoon. Please send a healthy, non-messy food choice, and limit the amount of food to one or two choices. Non-messy means no juice packed fruit cups, jello, yogurt, etc. Water only, please. They can have the messy snacks and juice at lunchtime. Send the snack in a separate bag labeled with their name. The snack is stored in a different place from the lunch boxes and they will appreciate not having to unpack their lunchbox every morning to find their snack.
Birthdays and Class Parties: Birthdays are celebrated by a crown (if desired) and a gift pencil. We sing Happy Birthday in the morning and congratulate them on being a year older. Please do not send food or goodie bags. Birthday invitations may not be given out in school.
Class parties are held 3 times a year. Class moms will manage the parties. All foods to be offered will be in compliance with the District Guidelines. You should still send a snack on these days, because if your child does not like the foods offered, he/she will then still have something to eat.
